IWSG and Partying with Piper!!!

It's IWSG day...but it's also my book birthday week. Before launching into IWSG, I want to thank the following people who are giving some Piper Morgan love on their blogs today. Please stop by and check them out if you get a chance!

And now, on to this month's IWSG post.

Each month we have a question. This month's question is:

Have you taken advantage of the annual A to Z Challenge in terms of marketing, networking, publicity for your book? What were the results?

For those who don't know, the A to Z Challenge is a fun online meme where participants post every day in April, with each day's post covering a letter of the alphabet. I participated in 2015 and 2016 and had a blast with these two themes:

I don't have to tell you that writing 26 blog posts in one month is a lot of work. But it would be worth it if the challenge brought a crapton of new readers. In 2015 it did. In 2016, notsomuch. Most people didn't get that the point of the challenge was to meet new people. They posted a lot and read absolutely nothing. So...

Your mileage may vary...so if you want to have fun, I urge you to go for it!

Are you participating in the A to Z Challenge this year?

  1. Yes, I'm participating in the A to Z challenge.
The challenge is to meet new people and you're right in saying that some participants miss the point.

    Happy Book Birthday Week!
    Happy IWSG Day!

    1. I think I made maybe three or four new friends last year? And I read every blog on the list--yep, every single one of them! It didn't make it worth it for me...but the first year, I made a bunch of new friends.

  2. Hello Stephanie, I just noticed your new book over at Alex J. Cavanaugh’s blog, congratulations! I love the new cover it reminds me of my two little granddaughters. I hope the blog tour goes well.

    1. Thanks, Barbara! It was a fun one to write...it was set in a pool shop.

  3. Happy to do a shout out for you today!
There was a dip last year. After doing it since the first year, I think there was a dip the year before as well. Add maintaining the list and dealing with the amount of visitors I get and it just wasn't worth losing an entire month anymore.

    1. Thank you, Alex! I don't know how you do all you do. And now they aren't keeping a list--I don't blame them. So many people drop off, may as well just have people check in every day to say they're still participating. I think also, the first year I did it I was new to the IWSG, so I could grab all the IWSG members who get that blogging means reading other blogs. After I'd friended all of those, the second year was just more of people who don't get that!

  4. I noticed a nice bump the last time I did it in 2015, but I skipped last year. We'll see how this year pans out and if its worth the work. Fortunately I did more evergreen topics this year that can be referenced or explored for years to come.

Congratulations once again on the new book!

    1. I'll be interested to hear. Please let us know somehow...maybe in the follow-up post in May?!

  5. Congrats on your book release! Too bad that last year people did not work at making new blogger friends.

    1. That's the problem with any blog hop. Even with IWSG, I read every new person participating each month and get maybe one or two reads in return? You go in knowing that--but A to Z is a LOT of work to not be worth it.

  6. I found some A-Z years better than others re networking, etc. I think sometimes people underestimate how much time visiting and commenting take - it's a lot of work!

    Congrats on the new book!

    1. It IS. A lot of people drop out. People have no idea how many until they actually help out with checking for people who are no longer posting. Most people make it to D or so, and then they're gone!

  7. I am not participating this year. I tried last year and made it to D I believe. I felt like a major failure!

    1. LOL, as you see just above, D is a pretty common stopping point! Four days appears to be the limit to daily posting. I wrote all of mine a month in advance or I would've for sure stopped when I realized everyone was posting without reading others' posts.

  8. I thought about maybe trying this year, but as you said, 26 posts in one month is a lot. Trying to come up with a theme is hard as well. I've been participating in the Alphabet Soup reading challenge since last year, in which you read a book beginning with each letter. They have special exceptions for Q, X, and Z--these may be found anywhere in the title.

Once again, congrats on the new book. Will be ordering soon.

  9. I quit for similar reasons, Steph. The benefits didn't seem to outweigh the consequences of time suck. It was fun meeting new bloggers, but I've had to set priorities and this wasn't a choice that fit in with those.

  10. Congratulations on the new book! I've been out of touch, but life is settling, so I'll have to give Piper some love soon. Love these stories. They're such fun!

I'm not attempting the challenge this year either. It's just too much right now.

  11. LOL! I did the A to Z a couple times. It was great fun, but whew! I was so done when I finished each time. I think the only way to do it is to start writing posts in January so it doesn't get overwhelming, and have everything ready to go once April starts so you can put sufficient energy into visiting others.

    Love the CUTE book.

  12. Congrats on more Piper. Always a good thing
A -Z is fun. I met you through it, but I admit I was guilty of not reading a ton more blogs. Just out of time each night.

  14. Congrats on the new release! Love those covers!

I did enjoy the A-Z Challenge the few years I participated in it, but it was overwhelming to visit so many blogs, which to me was always the point, so I've opted out of the Challenge.

  15. Congratulations and all the best concerning your release. I hope your sales wow you.

As to your question, I am not participating in A to Z this year. I have other priorities that I want to finish.

  16. I know I have not been doing an A-Z this month either, but I was somewhat disappointed you are not doing one. Both of the past A-Z themes you did I read and loved. I'm certain whatever you would have done this year, I would have read. To be honest, your Monday posts I have missed the most and will likely go back and check out more of your Unsolved Mystery posts.
Glad to know you are doing well and the series is going great. I will check back in from time to time.
And yes, it always annoyed me when I would visit umpteen different authors in the A-Z challenge from the previous years, and only a handful, or less, stopped to visit me.
Obviously, I am excluding those who were my regular blog readers and always stopped by for a visit.

  17. Every time I see your cover I love Piper more. Congratulations.
I'm not doing the A to Z this year. Too much else going on.

  18. I didn't participate this year. See you tomorrow;)

  19. Congratulations on your Book Birthday Week, Stephanie!
I've never (yet) taken part in the A-Z Blogging Challenge. Last April I had only been blogging for three-months at the time so wasn't aware of the challenge. This year I thought I would dedicate myself to reading as many A-Z challenge blogs that I can. So far, I have greatly been enjoying participating this way. PS - I'm very impressed that you read every single blog on the A-Z Challenge last year. Now, that's dedication!

  20. Have a wonderful book birthday! Congratulations on all of your publishing accomplishments.
The A to Z challenge is indeed about connecting with people.

  21. Hi, Stephanie! I hope that you have had a fun book birthday week. Piper Morgan looks like she's a lot of fun too. I've never participated in the A to Z Challenge. I'm afraid it would distract me from my other writing projects. It is fun to visit and see what others are writing in their blogs though. Happy writing in April!
