Mystery Monday: Brandon Lawson

It's Monday, which means it's time for another...

There's no shortage of mysterious roadside disappearances in this country's history. In fact, if you want to get abducted by aliens, I'm starting to think your best bet is to just stand by your car at the side of the road.

Brandon Lawson was a 26-year-old father of four who lived in San Angelo, Texas with his girlfriend. On the night of August 9, 2013, he left his home just before midnight after he and his girlfriend got into a fight.

Approximately 45 minutes later, he called his brother to say he'd run out of gas. He then called 9-1-1. The recording of the call has been widely distributed and analyzed...it's very difficult to interpret in places, but here's a sample:

Brandon: Yes, I'm in the middle of the field ...(inaudible)...right here, goin' towards Abiline, on both sides........my truck ran out of gas... there's one car here...(inaudible). Please hurry.

9-1-1 Emergency: Ok. Now. Run that by me.....?

Full transcript here.

When Brandon's brother arrived, his truck was there but he was nowhere to be found. His keys and cell phone were missing, as well.

He had an outstanding felony warrant at the time he disappeared, but he was the one who called 911 and asked for them to send the police. Could he have somehow gotten afraid that he'd be arrested and taken off? Or an even better question...what could have spooked him so badly that he'd call and ask for the police when he knew he had an outstanding warrant?

What do you think happened to Brandon Lawson?

  1. Maybe he ran into some guy who were more criminal than him? May there was a mob assasination or big arms deal he stumbled upon?

    1. Or just a drug deal...although I guess that wouldn't necessarily lead someone to harm the person who stumbled upon it.

  2. Maybe it was orchestrated. Or he had the bad luck to run into the wrong person.

    1. Sounds like whatever it was, it's unlikely he's still alive.

  3. I think he's dead. How horrible for his family and kids, never knowing. I think that's the worst.

    1. I agree. It's SO rare that people leave and start a new life, although we always want to imagine that they do in these types of stories.

  4. I agree with Marcy. It's worst that his family doesn't know what happened to him.

    1. It always astounds me that people can just "disappear." How? Where are the remains? If he wandered off and succumbed to the elements, wouldn't he have been found by now? But this country is pretty vast, I guess...

    2. I feel the same way about disappearances -- I always want some clue or indication of what happened!

  5. What was the felony warrant for? He hasn't been missing that long in the scheme of things. My first thought is that he disappeared on purpose to avoid prison. My second thought is related to the warrant. If it was drug related, drug dealers may have killed him to keep him quiet. I guess I'd observe his family and see how desperate they are to find him. That might give a clue as to whether he has truly disappeared or is in hiding. I know; I know. It's terrible that I'm skeptical simply because he is male...

    1. It just says he had a warrant but his family doesn't think he'd run because of it? If you listen to the 911 call, it definitely sounds like there were other people there and he was afraid of them. "chased them into the woods" is one of the things it sounds like he says. I do wonder why there's no detailed information about the felony warrant.

  6. For his family's sake, I hope he's hiding somewhere. I wonder what the warrant was for? Was he already mixed up with drug dealers or people who would want to do him harm if he was arrested and gave information to the police?

    1. I hope he's hiding, too, but I feel like that's unlikely.

  7. That is a mystery. I wonder what happened to the girlfriend. Did she contact someone? Sad to think his family are left wondering what happened to him.

    1. She tried to call him repeatedly that night...I don't think she was involved in any way. It sounds like they got into a fight and he drove off and whatever happened, happened when he broke down.

  8. surely sounds like he ran into trouble. it doesn't sound like he was afraid of the police, quite the contrary, it sounds like he knew he needed them, he needed help - he was frightened!! i would be surprised if he were still alive!!

    1. Yes, you could tell he was frightened about something on that call.

  10. So young. Every tragic story like this is a reminder that the people who loved them live with the loss every single day. So sad.

    1. Yes, and it's especially hard when there's no closure.

  11. He is dead, they just haven't found the body. When a man has an argument with his girlfriend/wife, some not only go for a drive but end up at a bar. I wonder if he did this and decided to leave or simply noticed someone was following him. Being in the road in the middle of the night is the most dangerous time because that is when the predators are out. It's a very sad story

  12. Oh yes, I remember this one. So tragic.

  13. Makes me wonder if he met up with a bigger, badder dude. He definitely seemed to want help, especially since it was him who called 911.

  14. I was kind of hoping he skipped town - but it doesn't sound that way.

  15. It's always so sad and confusing when people disappear like this and I can only imagine how distraught it leaves the families too as there's no closure on something like this. I definitely echo your thought on why he was so spooked to call 911 with a warranty on him, that's unnerving and worrying, but then as with the other comments above, maybe he came across something he knew I'd need help to get away from? It's one of those stories that sends your mind reeling, I just feel bad for the family. Thank you for sharing all of these stories too! - Tasha

  16. There are so many possibilities, all of them bad, I think. The family and children must be devastated. It's terrible not to know what happened to him. I hope they find out some day so they can put the horror in the past and go on.

  17. YIKES! I haven't heard about this one, and actually lived in Abilene Texas for a while. Stories of disappearances are always so sad, because there's no closure for friends and family.

  18. Wonder if he got mixed up in something really bad and someone found a way to get rid of him. =S

  21. I know someone who "disappeared" for four years and has now reappeared. I think this person hid in plain sight.

  22. Yikes, that's freaky. Something must've really spooked him to call the cops if he had a warrant. Maybe whatever it was turned out to be nothing though, and so he just fled? Either that, or he was kidnapped/killed :-/ But I agree with everyone else, having someone disappear with no closure would have to be the worst.

  23. Wow, this is really interesting! I really wonder what happened? Did he die? Is he hiding?
