Here's to All the Moms

Today is my mom's birthday. This is my mom:

Since Mother's Day is Sunday, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to all of the great moms in the world.

My parents were divorced when I was five. When your mom raises you alone, she's a special kind of superhero. This was my mom, my sister, and me in Germany when I was six:

There's something special about the relationship between a mother and her child. You only appreciate it as you get older. And that support doesn't end. Your mom will always be there for you, as your number one cheerleader.

How are you celebrating this Mother's Day?

  1. Happy birthday to your mom!
Won't get to see mine, but I will call her. My father was in the service, so there were long stretches where she did raise my brother and I by herself.

  3. This is a beautiful tribute to your mom. It's bittersweet for me as my mom has dementia. She can speak with me and knows who I am and my brother but last year, her memory was a bit better and could talk longer about the past, she was walking with her cane and laughed more. Now she remembers less, loses her memory before the sentence is done and she needs oxygen 24hrs a day and needs a walker. If we take her off the floor, she needs to be in a wheelchair because she loses breath. I wish I had my mom...my old mom so hug your mom even tighter...for me:) she is a rare being who loves you no matter what and is there for you always as you already know.

  5. I'm lucky. I have two moms, and they are both the best in their own ways. I'll be spending time with one on Sunday but will have to call the other.

  6. Happy Birthday to your beautiful Mother, there is no greater blessing in the world than to have one that is always there for you. Mine was very special to me too. I will be celebrating Mother's Day with children and grandchildren and it will be a happy occasion but Mom in Heaven will remain in my mind. She is always who I think of when I hear "Mother."

    1. So sorry--yes, the circle of life. I think all moms and grandmothers will always think of their own moms first and foremost on Mother's Day.

  7. Happy Birthday to your mom! It's nice that you are close. I'm very blessed that my children are close to me and I see them a lot (even though they're in their 30s). I didn't get that so much with my mother, but then I left when I was 18 (for the Army). Now I live too far away (across the country) to pop in and visit, so she'll have to settle for a phone call. :)

  8. Nice tribute to your Mom. I am cooking dinner for my kids which is what I enjoy doing. Wish I had fond memories of my Mom, but I don't. And trying to conjure some up only makes the bad things worse.

  15. What a lovely tribute to your mom! I raised my son alone from his birth until he turned 5, when I remarried, so I know how tough it can be to do it alone. Kudos to your mom, and to you for knowing how to appreciate her!

  38. Mother's Day is always a very somber day for me that I tend to spend quietly. I have for many years because, despite the time that has past, it still hurts deep on this day most of all. Luckily, my wife is good about gently pulling me out of my slump.

  39. Happy Birthday to your Mum. I think she deserves two celebrations, not a birthday and Mother's Day rolled into one :) I celebrated Mother's Day by talking to my Mum in Germany and being treated to a lunch of Dimsums by my youngest daughter. The other two aren't here.
