O Is for Joey Lynn Offutt

This month I'm participating in the A to Z ChallengeMy theme this year is Unsolved Mysteries. Today's letter is:

On July 12, 2007, neighbors called for help after hearing a loud explosion at Joey Lynn Offutt's house. Her home was in flames by the time emergency personnel arrived. Joey's six-month-old son was killed in the fire but Joey and her red Saturn were missing.

Friends and family hadn't heard from her for days. Her home health nurse had come by the house days earlier and found her car in the driveway. Inside the house was a car seat and a note on the floor. Joey didn't answer knocks on the door.

Four days later, officers found her red Saturn in a nearby apartment complex where she had once lived.

Fire officials ruled the fire in Joey's home as arson, set in two separate places in the house. There have been no viable leads and Joey remains missing to this day. Days before her disappearance, a neighbor reported seeing her walking with her stroller. He called out to her and she ignored him. The neighbor said he didn't recall seeing a baby in the stroller.

What do you think happened to Joey?

  1. If she set fire to the place and killed her baby, then that's terrible!

    1. That's kinda how it looks, right? She had a lot of issues, but it's possible she fell in with the wrong person and he killed her and took her car and abandoned it in a parking lot. There seems to be a trend throughout many of these missing women cases where they're never seen again and their cars are found later...often in apartment parking lots.

  2. Another sad situation. Sounds like there was something up if the neighbor saw her with a stroller but no baby inside.

    1. I know. For some reason that part of the story sounds spookiest of all to me.

  3. To completely disappear from your life is a very difficult thing to do unless you're dead. This is one of those terrible situations where it would be easy to assume she killed the child and then ran away, - terribly sad if that is what happened.

    1. I think so, too...although something I was listening to said it isn't as hard as you'd think. Apparently if you move to another state, even if you're working under the same social security #, police across state lines don't collaborate on that sort of thing unless there's a reason to. So someone would just have to dramatically change her appearance and maybe somehow go by a different name (if the case is still getting national media attention) and nobody would know, especially after a decade or so passed...

  4. It looks like she set fire to the house and ran away. Maybe she was suffering for postpartum depression?

    1. Definitely possible...I don't know much about it. Does it last six months?

  5. Yep, I'm thinking postpartum depression too. Sure sounds like it with the way she was acting beforehand.

    1. Definitely some form of depression!

  6. I hope the truth isn't that she set fire to her house and killed her child, but it sounds like that could be the case. Very sad.

    1. I never can comprehend how a parent can do something like that. I always think that when people push other people to have kids--there are some people that just shouldn't have them.

  7. Such a sad event. Seems like she had a lot of problems.

  8. Sounds like foul play to me. There's more to this than we know. I'll be the cops know, but we don't. So sad about that baby.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

    1. I agree 100%. People really need to watch the 48 Hours on ID special on this. I think many would have a completely different opinion!

  9. Much as I hate to say it, I think she had killed the baby by the point when her neighbour saw her with the empty stroller, and then burned the house out to cover the evidence and disappeared by choice

  10. Oh my goodness, what a coincidence. Just that last week or so I was watching a tv programme which featured this very person. Not sure exactly what to make of events but my money would go on foul play of some sort.

  11. I believe she was manipulated. Seems like there is so much more to this story that we'll never know (as with most mysteries i guess) but something tells me this runs deeper than some random murder. Another interesting mystery.

  12. You have been doing a kick ass job keeping up with this every day!!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. that is very sad especially with the son dying in the fire. Unless...did she set this up for some reason? If so, that's extra horrific. You've come up with some wild mysteries

  14. Unfortunately we see this kind of story too many times in the media.

  15. Your stories keep popping in my head throughout the day.. eek! I hate that we will never know what has happened in these situations.

  16. hmm , def suspicious! these stories are like train wrecks, I can't look away!

  17. That's terrible news about the baby. What do you know about the baby's father?

  18. God only knows where she might be. How awful about the baby. Is it possible that she was psychotic and didn't know what she was doing?

  20. Maybe she had some type of breakdown?

  21. Yes sadly it sounds suspicious for the mother!

  22. Another creepy one. I do no not understand how any woman could kill her baby...and in a fire, no less. Ugh...

    ReplyDelete
  23. She must have snapped. Maybe she was on meds that made her act aggressively. Afterwards, who knows? She might have just wandered off and died alone.

  24. I'm so sorry the son died. I think she's responsible in some way.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Gosh that is just a awful story and I am sad to think a mom may have been responsible for her babies death but I guess that is where my mind leads on this story. :(

  26. I think this is a case of severe postpartum depression maybe with some other type of mental health issue~
    So, horribly sad~

  27. Hmm...could be someone took her, blew up her place and did away with her but why blow up her house?? The baby was 6 months old and I am thinking the severe post parfumerie depression which has made some women do very sad and horrible things. I wonder what her mood was like before and if her bank accounts were cleared out.

  28. I'm starting to agree with those who think depression was an issue here.

  29. I agree with some of the comments above. As terrible as it sounds, she may have killed her baby, possibly by accident, around the time she stopped communicating with people and then used the fire as a cover-up for his death. I'm not sure about her, unless she knew someone who helped her create a new identity at the apartments.

  30. That's kind of scary. I wonder if she had something to do with the fire. I would be surprised if she set the fire though without anyone else seeing her leave the house. Why would she want to do that and kill her child? Was she going to take her son somewhere? What was on the note? How did the car end up at her old apartment? Was it someone she knew? So many questions.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Where was the baby's father? Sounds like an elaborate plan for someone suffering from postpartum depression, since they seem to simply snap. This sure points to something carefully planned.

  32. My better question, who names their daughter Joey?

    1. For sure. But her boyfriend had a girls name. They had a role reversal

    2. Maybe her full name is Josephine?!!!

  33. Very sad story I think she murdered her baby :(

  34. Does anyone KNOW WHEN the home health nurse went by the house the first time? What date?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Just to clarify, the baby was 6 WEEKS old, not 6 months. Also, it was determined that the baby was dead before the fire was started. I just re-watched the 2012 episode regarding Joey's disappearance on Investigation Discovery.

  36. I don't think she had the mental capacity to do all that or create a new identity remember her mental capacity was that of a 14 year old I just don't see her having the tools, resources, or smarts to be able to disappear and stay hidden. Also she absolutely loved that house it was freedom to her and a stable place for her children. There has to be foul play here joey was very neive and talking to people and men online this could have something to do with it but because the car ended up at the complex her and her boyfriend lived in I think it's possible it's someone who is close to her

    1. I agree with you,i think her mental capacity played a large role here. I don't think she could have pulled this off. The Dr told her mother she had the mental capacity of a 14 yr old. Her mother even said she never met a stranger, never saw danger, and even picked up hitchhikers. Real naive. She thought she could be a model, and it was a sleazy porn maker. Plus it takes alot of money to disappear. We know she didn't have that because her mother bought the home. I don't think it was Internet related though, because they said her internet had been shut off for a month. I think she met someone who recognized her mental state and took advantage, or someone she previously knew. We see stories all the time about ppl who hold a persons child hostage and make them go get money for them. I think that may be the case here. I think that's why she was seen pushing the stroller, but was no baby inside. The person might have made her take the stroller so it would not be suspicious, and told her not to talk to anyone but made a mistake by letting ppl be able to see into the stroller. I think if she had done it, She wld have bundled blankets up in the stroller, and talked to the neighbor to make it look as normal as possible. I think the apartment complex where her car was found definetely comes into play because they previously lived there. That makes me think it was possibly a previous neighbor, who knew them, and knew her mental capacity. And what better way to make the boyfriend look guilty than to park the car there. I think she ran across a previous neighbor who found out she no longer lived with the bf, and decided she was an easy victim. I don't think the bf was smart enough to pull this off, even though he failed a polygraph test. Plus he's raising his daughter after all this happened, that doesn't sound to me like someone who would just coldly murder their child. I think he stopped cooperating with police because he knew they were trying to build a case against him. If he felt in the smallest way possibly responsible, like feeling guilty that he couldn't protect them, that would cause him to fail a lie detector. I think it's someone who knew her well enough to know her mental capacity, but not well enough to be tied to her by her family. Whatever happened to her i hope they find out the truth eventually and give that family some peace. And the cold blooded sob that killed that baby, and most likely her, get what they deserve.

  37. I agree 100%! I'm so relieved someone was paying closer attention to the details. The victims mother was told by professionals that guessing her to have a 14 year old mental capacity was being kind and definitely overestimated! She wasn't mentally capable of coming up with a plan that would have her hidden and off the radar for all these years! She was obviously taken advantage of by someone she had entirely too much trust for! I come to that conclusion based on where her car was found! Also when the car was found the drivers seat was set way back for a much larger person! She was very petite and would have had the seat pulled up close to the steering wheel. There are so many more reasons to believe that this poor young lady was a victim along with the precious baby! I pray for the family to finally get answers!

  38. I have a hard time believing she is responsible. She seems to have been supported by her mother, no way she took off and successfully disappeared. Her fiance was there and they had a fight right? Wasn't it reported that her other child was taken from her due to an investigation concerning HIS other child or not? Didn't Disappeared report that he checked on the house and ran into that health care worker who said she would report some thing right before the house exploded?

  39. I dont think Joey did this at all I think the boyfriend accidently killed her as they argued over Joey bathing the baby in the sink. I think the baby drowned accidently in the sink possibly as they fought and then the boyfriend lost it and accidently killed her. He then put the baby in the bathtub as he didnt know what to do or how to explain what happened. He went back to the house several times over the 8 days and knocked only and left notes to give him a alibi or story? Seems a bit weird in itself he says he thought something was wrong and with your 6 week old son inside you dont contact the police to see she and your son are ok...sorry that doesnt add up and he only contacted police when the health lady started contacting the mum and him with concerns and said she would contact the authorities.
He kept saying "oh she does this all the time and she will get really mad if we call the police" umm too bad your son is the priority...unless you already know something has happened to him. He just seemed to want to hold off to the last minute ...then the house burns down and he calls the police knowing evidence will be burnt. I believe Joey is buried in the basement and the fire covered it up or he took her and buried her somewhere. He also failed the polygraph.
If it was someone else they would have burnt the house down at the time not 8 days later...bit risky.
The neighbour only stated he didnt recall seeing the baby in the pram, at 6wks old a baby would be hard to see...especially across the street. However the bf could have disguised himself to pretend she was alive & could be why the neighbour was ignored. Her mother said she was friendly to strangers. Think the bf moved hef car during the night and moved it back to make it look as if she was alive...he couldve of easily parked few blocks away and walked to house, the car waz then at old apartment which I believe he still lives nearby
I feel for the baby and Joey very sad story.
