Smoky Mountain Madness

It was my husband's birthday, so we spent the weekend here:

Our adventure started Saturday, when we rolled into town around lunchtime. We checked into our hotel, which was:

Our room was beautiful. It looked similar to this:

Only with one bed instead of two. This was the view from our balcony:

After checking in, we headed over to Margaritaville's Restaurant for lunch. Good news! I found Jimmy Buffett's lost shaker of salt.

Margaritaville is part of a (relatively) new attraction in the Smoky Mountains called "the Island." There's a ferris wheel and about a billion shops:

One of them was this lovely place. Apparently since I last visited the mountains, moonshine has become a major force in the tourism industry. These places are everywhere now:

They do "moonshine tastings," which involve 13 tiny shots of different types of moonshine. People (including parents with young children) were lined up all around the bar for the show.

It's truly something to witness, even if you don't drink. A very amusing show.

My high school classmate stars in this show...but I, unfortunately, didn't get to make it there. If you're ever in the Smoky Mountains, you have to check it out, though:

Sunday was a beautiful day. We had our usual Gatlinburg breakfast at this must-visit location:

Then made the long shopping journey up and down this strip:

What did you do this weekend?

  1. A movie and get together with friends, so not quite as exciting.
Did you go up the ski lift or into the famous cars place? Or eat at the Mellow Mushroom? Awesome food.
We did try the moonshine, but neither of us drinks hard alcohol.
Hope your husband had a great time.

    1. Neil did the car place a few years ago...and the ski lift has taken me up that mountains many, many times over the years! We have a bunch of Mellow Mushrooms in Nashville--one is opening 10 minutes from my house (supposedly--although they still haven't started construction on it!). The moonshine was WAY too strong for me. I like alcohol that tastes more like Kool-Aid!

    1. The shopping was all for other people. My husband bought some jeans, but the rest were souvenirs.

  6. Fun getaway! I'd probably skip the moonshine but pancakes? Yum! :)

Quiet weekend here - errands, trying to get caught up on a few things, reading and relaxing.

  10. What a fabulous weekend! I love the Smoky Mountains and all the tucked-away places along the way. I'm not so much for moonshine but the lost shaker of salt would come in handy for a burger and fries!

    1. Moonshine is pure yuckiness but they start with the worst and work their way down. In about half of them, the sweetness overpowered the moonshine and you couldn't even taste it. There was one at the end that tasted like Bailey's. Of course, the diluted ones don't have much alcohol in them, but I'm more interested in drinks that taste good than anything else!

  11. It sounds like you and hubby had a great time and I love the photos. I've always liked the name, "Gatlinburg," it lends itself to song lyrics like "Margaritaville" does in Texas. We ended up my granddaughter's successful livestock show with a very successful auction Saturday. Her college fund keeps growing every show season and that's a good thing. She wants to be a doctor. Have a great week!

  13. How fun and happy birthday to your hubby.

We've been to Margaritaville in Grand Turk and it was a fun place.

We have spent the weekend on our boat. It's been wonderful.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

    1. Nice! I'd been to the Margaritaville in Nashville, but it's a little different. It has a honky-tonk where the bar is to lure in people walking by, then behind it is a normal Margaritaville. Weird!

  22. Happy Birthday to your husband! It looks like a fun weekend! Toronto is having Winterlicious restaurant deals so we participated by visiting a couple of them. It is something restaurants put on during this slow time of year. http://www.toronto.com/guides/winterlicious/
