The Best-Kept Nail Polish Secret You’ll Ever Hear

For years, I avoided wearing nail polish. Why? Apparently I spend so much time typing, I knock the polish right off my nails. I'd paint them and within a day I'd see a chip.

Gel nail polish resists chipping, so I tried that for a few weeks last summer. I learned about the latest trend in nail polish: accent nails.

With an accent nail, one finger is different than the rest. But you don't have to stop there. I told the manicurist to get creative...this was the result:

After dealing with gel nail removal twice, I decided it wasn't worth the 15 minutes of soaking and scraping it required. I decided to go with normal (non-gel) nail polish. I chose a color that matched my car.

"How long will this last?" I asked. She answered, "Just put top coat on every day or two and it can last a week or longer." So I invested in the same kind of top coat she used...

...and guess what? She was right. If I start every day by brushing top coat over the tips of my nails and then putting a layer across each nail, my polish can last ten days without chipping. So, combining OPI and Incoco nail polish strips, I've been getting creative. There's this:

And this:

And this:

And this:

One layer of topcoat and it lasts 7-10 days. The nail polish strips last longer than nail polish, by the way. The moral?

    1. I did before the topcoat thing. I would polish them, then look down and two days later they'd be chipped. It was SO frustrating, I just gave up for about 10 years.

  2. Wow! I generally only use a translucent pearl color. My nails grow fast and it looks awful in less than a week with the unpolished nails at the cuticle.

    1. That IS fast! It takes about 10 days for mine to look bad at the cuticle area. That was another huge problem with gel polish. It lasts three weeks, but about half of that time it looks silly.

  3. I noticed my wife rarely wears any

    1. It's tough to find time. Polishing them takes only a couple of minutes, but sitting still long enough for them to dry is the hard part.

  4. I really like the blue. One of my favorites because it's the color of ink! I like your top coat suggestion. I'll give it a try!

    1. It's hard to get the darker polishes on perfectly. I've noticed that much!

  5. Ooh, I love them! Especially the sparkly ones! love to paint my nails (and toenails) but I don't do it as often as I'd like. I've been wanting to try the strips, I'd love to find some with words on them. I like Jamberry, but feel they're kind of expensive.

    1. I tried Jamberry...once. They were a nightmare. The whole "heating before you apply" thing is ridiculous. Have you tried Incoco? Same concept but half the price and you just stick them on. Plus they're made of real nail polish, so they don't feel like you're wearing tissue paper on your nails.

  6. OMG those sparkly green ones are fantabulous! And the blue ones too! Such delight

  7. These are great looks. I gave up on nail polish a few months ago because I was tired of the chipping. Maybe I'll try the OPI top coat. The other kind I wore would peel off, along with the nail polish.

    1. I hate chipping! I got lazy last week and didn't do the daily top coat and guess what? Chip-o-rama! I just scrubbed it all off and put new polish on. I just put a coat on every morning when I sit down at my computer and type carefully for as long as I can!

  9. Very nicely colorful!! I haven't worn nail polish in years (probably for the same reason you didn't before since I type 8 hours a day), but might have to look into this.

    1. I think the key is not only a new coat every day but OPI. That's the polish the every salon I've been to uses. My grocery store seems to always be out of the top coat, though, so I end up buying it on Amazon.

  10. okay, GETTING THIS TOP COAT NOW. I have a very love hate relationship with nail polish for this reason. I have two nail polish racks filled with gorgeous bottles but it's never worth it to me to apply it since it chips in like two seconds. I use an old bottle of Revlon base coat that's prob 3 yrs old lol and very goopy.

    1. I will say that I've noticed that OPI nail polish in general lasts longer than the other stuff. That's probably why manicurists use it. The Incoco strips last longer than the nail polish, but each set will cost about $8 unless you buy them on sale, so it's more expensive than a bottle of nail polish.

  12. Awesome nail polish. I like to paint my nails, but they chip in a day and its an endless, crazy cycle. I'll try the top coat. Thanks Stephanie.

  13. Love all the awesome designs! Super cute. And I'm definitely going to give that clear top coat a try.

  14. What awesome designs! I keep my nails short and I can't even remember the last time I wore nail polish. But maybe I ought to start again just for those fun designs. :) Have a terrific weekend.

    1. I keep mine short now, too. It's tough to type with long nails. I know Sandra Brown does it, but I tried it and it isn't for me!

  15. Oh my! Looks like fun. I've never tried accent nails. I did find though that I could get greater mileage by layering the protective coats between color coats but if you use too many coats, it will chip up on you. Gel polish is great but you're right, the clean up is a nightmare. I don't think its good for your nails at all!

    1. I do a base coat, two coats of color (unless it's Incoco) and one top coat. Then every day after, just one top coat. After about a week, it feels pretty thick but similar to how gel nails feel/look. At 10 days, I get sick of looking at the way it's grown out at the cubicle and remove it and start over. If I do a top coat every day, it doesn't chip--but if I miss more than one day, it'll chip, usually at the first two fingers of my right hand. I can skip a day occasionally, depending on how much I'm doing around the house...but two days? Nope!

  16. My nail gal does mine and they stay on until she does them again. They are baked on. Won't chip.

Loved the 4th of July ones the very best.

I just gave my secret away too.

Have a fabulous day and weekend. ☺

  17. I don't have the patience, but your nails do look beautiful! As a kickboxer, I had to give up on nail polish. Even with a top coat, the polish shatters with a single good punch.

Did the gel polish weaken your nails at all? I was tempted to try it, but I'm afraid of damaging my nails.

    1. If you have them professionally removed and the person does it right, it doesn't hurt your nails. It takes 15 minutes at least for it to soak, so you have to sit there for that time with aluminum foil on your nails covering cotton soaked in remover. When the manicurist tries to rush that part of the process, it can cause nail damage, but good ones don't.

  18. I'll have to give that a try. It seems like within a day, my nails are messed up. *glances at nails currently*

  19. Thank you Steph... I am definitely going to try this ... I got gel polish that has been on a month... I have to go get it removed soon... I'm going to try this method as I like to change my nail color xox

By the way I met somebody and he seems really nice... I'm going to let everyone know when I'm more sure ♡

  20. My 14 year old grand-daughter does all those pretty things to her nails with different colors and designs but grandma at 77 doesn't really want to draw attention to her hands all that much. :) I still have nicely shaped sturdy nails that will grow long and let them somewhat as long as I can type. They have yellowed with age and I do keep them polished in light pinks and corals. I found out that top coat secret by trial and error. It does work well..

  21. Wow. Grubbing in the garden (and laziness) are not kind to nail polish. Yours do look good though. Very good.

  22. OH! You put it on every day? That's what I've been doing wrong.

  23. Ugh, but I don't want to spend the time doing a topcoat every day. (And I really don't want to spend all that time taking off the gel polish) *sigh*

  26. I could never wear nail polish on my fingernails because it felt like my nails couldn't sweat. It really irritated me due to the heaviness and that weird feeling under my nails. I love to do funky things on my toe nails though. I love your nails-they are really so creative looking and fun. I love the glitter

  31. Aren't you fancy! That's an excellent tip. I paint my toe nails, but stopped doing my nails because of the chipping. I have my hands in water a lot, so a polish usually lasts about a day.
