Express Yourself: Best Movie of 2014

I've been bad. I was supposed to be participating in this every week...

But I forgot.

So I'll just jump right in like I've been here all along. So...um...yeah...every week, I participate in the Express Yourself meme. This week's assignment is to talk about the best movie I saw in 2014.

I have a good one for that!

(Pssst: That's kind of why I decided to jump in this week!)

I watched this movie in December and loved, loved, LOVED it.

The movie centers around a writer's group filled with quirky individuals. If you've seen any of Christopher Guest's movies, it will feel slightly familiar.

When Hannah, the young writer who doesn't even read, lands an agent and book deal, she has to deal with her fellow writers' jealousy. It's a great movie even if you have no interest in being a writer, but if you're a writer, you'll want to watch it over and over.

Best of all, it's on Netflix. Here's the trailer.

  1. Guest directed? I'll have to watch it then. Wasn't crazy about Best in Show, but Waiting for Guffman was hilarious.
Don't worry, Dani and Jackie will forgive you.

    1. Guest didn't direct--but I would be willing to bet the filmmakers were inspired by him. It reminded me of Waiting for Guffman.

  2. I'll add it to my "watch" list. Thanks for the recommendation!

  3. I will most definitely have to check this out, Stephanie!

  4. It's difficult to pick just one. Some favorites were Enemy, White God, Lost River, and NightCrawler.

    1. I didn't see many movies in 2014, unless you count all the Hallmark Christmas movies I watched in December!

  5. I only switched two movies in 2014.....Frozen at the theatre and some weird Indie film at home that my son thought wouldn't be too violent to watch with me. I didn't really like either.

    1. I saw Frozen when it first came out at Thanksgiving. I had no idea it was going to become the phenomenon it did. It was really good--I just didn't see it as turning an entire generation of kids into Frozen fanatics!

  6. I don't think that I watched a single movie in 2014. I see clips and trailer . Oh wait a minute, I saw Elf on TV around Christmas, hahaha... pitiful busy life I lead but I love being busy.

The trailer was great. I bet I would like that movie even though I'm not a professional writer like you.

    1. One of my Canadian FB friends posted she was watching Fantasy Island on Netflix a year or so ago. I flipped! I said, "I didn't know Fantasy Island was on Netflix." She said you guys get different shows and movies than we do. Sure enough, Fantasy Island still isn't on our Netflix. Someone put about half of the first and fourth seasons on YouTube, but otherwise it's being kept offline here for some reason.

  10. I hadn't heard of it; I'm going to put it on my list to watch for though. Always good to see a good movie! We get movies through Redbox and for the life of me, can I remember any that we saw in 2014???

    1. We used to get Redbox movies until we rented one for my stepdaughter and accidentally left it in our DVD player. (We were on vacation so things were all chaotic.) They didn't email me--just charged my card $27 for the movie. That was it for me. We do On Demand now and just pay a few extra bucks if we want to watch something. Not that I'm angry at them or anything--I just don't want to take that risk anymore. Seems they could notify you once you reach the three-days-plus mark or something. They would have kept our business if they did.

    1. I first saw it on On Demand as a preview. When I saw it on Netflix, I was going to watch it immediately but Netflix wasn't working with Windows 8 at the time. I finally gave up and canceled Netflix but when I got my Mac and found Netflix worked again, it was the first movie I watched!

    1. It is! I first saw it last fall or late summer? I didn't get to watch it until December, though, because Silverlight and my old Windows 8 laptop (piece of junk) didn't like each other. I have a Mac now so I can actually get through my day without a thousand computer issues.

    1. It wasn't Christopher Guest--just similar in styling. I think all of Christopher Guest's movies are improvised? This seemed to be scripted but it had that same quirky feeling.

    1. Me, too! Usually movies about writers are SO unrealistic they drive me crazy. One thing that bugs me is that writers always go hang out in their editors' offices. Even if we lived in New York, I doubt our editors would want us just showing up to talk about our books.

    1. It reminded me of a writer's group I was once in where a woman showed up saying her book was coming out (with a major romance publisher) in a few months. She'd only started writing a year before. She was all giggly and, "I'm not sure WHY I'm just SO LUCKY" about it and I think we all wanted to smack her.

  23. One of my friends doesn't read. He considers himself a writer and EXPECTS that agents and publishers will track him down and shower him with wealth. And fame. And a movie of his work and his life will follow. If his expectations are ever realised my non-writing self will be furious on behalf of writers everywhere.

    1. The good news is, that's doubtful. I think the Chris Klein character in the movie would have made it eventually--it just wasn't his time yet People like your friend generally don't stick to it long enough. They move on to the next way to find fame, like getting on a reality show (which would probably be easier if fame is all you want!).

  39. I definitely need to see this - it's ages since I saw a good new movie. Interstellar was probably my favourite of 2014, even though it wasn't perfect - it absorbed me all the way through and some of the visuals were spectacular, so I guess that's as good as it gets!
