Nobody Wished Me a Happy Birthday on Facebook

Today's my birthday.

One of the best things about a birthday in the social media era is that you know, at any time of the day, you can log into Facebook and see a page full of Facebook birthday wishes.

A couple of years ago, while I was still working in an office, my cubicle neighbor was complaining that nobody had wished him a happy birthday on Facebook. I opened up my own Facebook page and looked for his name in the upper right-hand corner.

No name.

"Facebook doesn't know it's your birthday," I pointed out.

"I know. I don't want people to know," he said. "That's private information."

"Then how would they know to wish you a happy birthday?"

"They just should know," he said.

Hope you have a happy "my birthday!" I'm spending mine at the beach! See you all Monday.

  1. Happy birthday! lmao that is kind of umm dumb logic there. I guess mind readers are needed around him.

  4. Oh, that's funny. Facebook doesn't know about my birthday either. It's private, and I like to avoid the wall of birthday wishes. My mother still posts something every year though. But she's my mother, and she can do whatever she wants.

Best wishes for a very happy birthday, Stephanie!

  6. Happy Birthday Stephanie I hope that you have a marvellous day at the beach.
I'm like that man. I don't usually tell people when my birthday is but my kids do. I even sometimes forget my own birthday but my kids never forget...

Best wishes for a happy birthday, enjoy your day.

  16. Happy birthday, Stephanie! Believe it or not, I jumped over to Facebook to try and post a birthday wish there, too!

I'd love to think I have privacy; unfortunately, I know all too well that I do not. So, those who truly invade it with ill intent get both barrels of hillbilly wrath (not literally...just colorful speech, people). The cow is already out of the barn on privacy; people just don't realize it yet.

Was the guy in the cubicle a blonde? I'm thinking maybe with that logic.

  20. For some, Birthdays are a test. Facebook is like a cheat sheet.

    Happy Birthday.

  21. Happy Birthday, Stephanie! I hope you get spoiled rotten, or at the very least get to eat cake! I totally LOL'ed in RL when I read about your ex coworker's logic with regards to Facebook privacy. I used to hide mine for 364 days of the year, but make it visible the day-of just so I could get the wall posts. Hehe

  22. I'd much rather wish you a happy birthday here anyway. I don't do Facebook. All the best!

  23. I think I should come visit you on the beach and bring you cake.

Amazing how people feel isolated, but then you try to get them to be social and they balk. It's like enjoy being a hermit or put yourself out there.

Happy Birthday...off to facebook to plaster something on your wall.

  25. I can't imagine a better place to spend a birthday than at the beach! I haven't told FB my birthday either but I still get family greetings. I don't know, I just prefer getting birthday greetings in other ways than through FB...

They have no Facebook in that country. How on earth does anyone know when anyone else's birthday is? ;)
