The Nickelbacklash

I was on Facebook one day when I was directed to a link of people I should unfriend. Clicking on the link took me to a list of people on my friends list who have liked the band Nickelback.

While I'll admit I've never been a fan of the band that dominated radio in the mid-00s, I have to say I was a little surprised. Why such animosity? I decided to Google it. I found this.

And this.

And this.

Maybe that last one is the key to what's going on. Everyone seemed to like Nickelback in the 00s, so people felt pressured to like them. Now there's a backlash. A NICKELbacklash. What happened between then...

...and now to make the band so hated?

Granted, I was never a big fan. The lead singer always sounded a little scary to me. I felt like this was how Satan would sound if he could sing. Yet he had this super-nice look that didn't match his voice.

But this video serves as proof that quite a few people liked them enough to help them with their music video in 2005...including a few people you may recognize.

Is there a band whose music you hate with a passion?

  1. It's sad to see that. I really enjoyed the songs a while ago but it's sad it turns that way. We have the same here for a French singer and they all say mean things about him. Don't know why such hate.

  2. I never got on the band wagon with Nickleback when they were popular, I fell in love with a song of theirs in 2011... Far And Away.. I do love this song... sorry, lol ... I've never been one to follow the pack ;-)

  3. If you play it forward you hear Nickleback - hilarious!
Never a fan of the band, although we do have one of their discs. I don't think there's a band or singer I hate. Dislike strongly, yes.

  4. I never got into them but my husband liked them back in the day. No so much now though, lol.

  5. I liked a few of their songs. Can't say there is any I really hate. Will never listen to? Yep, but hate nah.

  6. Ha! I had no idea people hated Nickleback so much. Heck, I can barely even remember what they sing.

  7. That's ridiculous! People should be free to like who / want they want without getting hate mail on FB. I'm not a huge Nickelback fan, but I do enjoy some of their songs. I know they got a bit of a bad rep cuz a lot of their music is similar, and peeps complain that it's not 'real' rock, but I mean most of the top 40 songs sound the same to me so... Different strokes for different folks!

  8. awww. i liked 'em! great video, too. :)

  9. I don't get it? I think somebody started something and it spread and now it is an on going joke. It feels like "the Emperor's New Clothes". I like the band and my husband loves them especially the rawness of the lead singer's voice. Oh well. Now there is one band I can't stand and Alex will disown me on Blog land but that is Rush. I am a true Canadian and they are a Canadian band but the lead singer's voice makes me rather listen to nails on a chalkboard. Actually yesterday my husband had a song on from them, on the car radio. We proceeded to battle with the on/off switch of the radio:) Alex please don' hate me:)

  10. Birgit--I agree about the lead singer of Rush. And the lead singer of Guns N Roses had a voice that hurt my ears.

  11. Never heard of them before, but I'm 62 so it figures. Don't care for their music though.

    Have a fabulous day. :)

  12. I had no clue FB could direct you to a "list of friends to unfriend." Anyway lol, I also had no clue Nickleback had such a "hate fan base." I can't even remember their songs to know if I liked them or not, ah well. It's for the best, I s'pose, no need to become a satanic something lol

  13. I pay no attention to FB spam. It's sad that people campaign for popularity, or as in this case "unpopularity" :)

  14. Oh that's so sad and kinda ridiculous. I don't get it. I didn't hate them or love them really I don't think. They were just there. Weird the things people get hung up one.

  15. well, a proof that they might be satan's minions is the fact that the singer married Avril Lavigne. and we all know she's Lucifer's spawn :)

  16. My friend harasses me (in a friendly way) about my enjoyment of Nickelback. I asked her once why she hated Nickelback, and she just said, "because it's NICKELBACK." Ah well. We're still friends, regardless.

  17. This happens to all pop groups. They get famous, and then there's a huge backlash against them, simply because they're famous. Dezmond above shows it happened to Avril Lavigne.

This is probabaly before your time, but the Spice Girls became incredibly popular. At one point, the top five singles in the country were all by them. Then the backlash occurred. I saw a bumpersticker that read, "I am the anti-Spice."

  18. That's crazy. I don't hate any band, and I don't think there should be campaigns to hate bands. People can listen to whatever they want to listen to.

  19. Hating takes too much energy. I prefer to walk away - though sometimes it is a very fast walk.

  20. I did like a few Nickelback songs, but I wasn't a huge fan. I don't understand why everyone has chosen them for most hated band of the century, though.

  21. I got a big kick out if this post because yes, I do love to hate Nickelback.......though I do admit to not minding the Rockstar song.

There's also a hatred for Creed going on online.

  22. I never, ever use Facebook...it always seems to be a hateful group, and if you don't follow their lead, then you are outcast. No matter....there isn't a "Band" per sé that I dislike, but there is a style of music, and that is rap.

  23. I had no idea the lead singer of Nickelback married Avril Lavigne. I learned something new today! Odd pairing somehow...

  24. It is quite the interesting tale of hatred, usually it's reserved for boy-bands and singers like Justin Beiber

  25. Wow, didn't realize this band was so hated by some! Not that I'm a fan of it, in fact I'm having a time trying to remember any of it music. Thinking back, probably not had hate of a band, maybe a song by a particular band, but not hatred towards it.

  26. I've heard of Nickelback, but I don't remember their music. I like the video. The lead singer is hot.

  27. Oh too funny, my taste in music is as eclectic as my taste in books.

  28. I get Nickelback and Coldplay confused. I was reading this thinking- but I really liked their last song...and it's a Coldplay one! What little I've heard of Nickelback I liked though!

  29. Yes I think they were called Spandeau Ballet.

  30. I have to admit...I don't really....listen to bands. Or much music. I am like the ONLY person I know who just reads/writes/goes-about-life with minimal music. *shrugs* I used to play a LOT of music on my cello/piano so maybe I just overdosed? Mm. ANYWAY. I really don't like country music. I kind of leave any situations where Taylor Swift is playing but I don't hate her! Why hate on musicians?! I just have preferences.
Thanks for stopping by @ Notebook Sisters!

  31. I'm going to admit it, I've always been a fan ever since hearing them for the very first time. I don't understand the hate, I really don't. I think they are good and I really like their songs.

last year when I was going through a particularly bad time in my life I heard "Lullaby" by Nickelback and I will admit it..it pulled me back from committing suicide one night.

One of the lyrics in this song is:

"If you can hear me now, I'm reaching out to let you know that you're not alone."

I listened to that song for hours until I felt better.

  32. Hello,
I Never heard about it before but enjoyed reading the post :)

  33. I've never understood the Nickelback hatred. I had heard of it, but never really cared enough to follow through on why such animosity developed.

There is this one female singer whose voice is like fingernails on chalkboard to me. When I stumble across her on the radio, I have to instantly change the station. But I have no idea who she is.

(I stopped really paying attention to current music sometime in 1995. I know what I like, but ask me who it is or what the song is called, and I have no idea.)

  34. Mary Kirkland--amazing story. That's a testimony to the power of a song. Back in my teens there was a song called Out of Control by Oingo Boingo that had that affect. Any time I was going through a rough time in my life, I'd listen to that song and it would make me feel better.

  35. I think the band was okay. Not a favourite of mine.
Nickelback had quite a catchy song called "You Remind Me"
People need to stop using up valuable energy for hating musicians/actors/celebs.

  36. I don't have a band or singer I dislike that much.

However, I do have a rule that keeps me off Facebook so I don't have to "unfriend" anyone, ever. (I hate that word!)

    ReplyDelete
  37. wow amazing how much animosity they get. I've seen it too with Nickelback and can't understand it. Definitely was never a fan (the radio overplayed the hell out of them lol). The only artist that ever truly got under my skin terribly was James Blunt! His voice is like nails on a chalkboard for me and they overplayed that "You're Beautiful" song so much! But I have nothing against him personally haha just not my thing, music-wise

    ReplyDelete
  38. Stephanie, I've heard that song and can totally understand how a song can really help get you through a bad time. The power of words...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Glad you came back, Mary!!! I went back and watched the video (apparently they didn't want us to see what Danny Elfman looked like since his face was obscured through much of it--but he was good enough for Bridget Fonda to marry!). It really was an amazing song. Anyone going through a rough time should listen to it...especially the line that says, "If you throw away your life the world will never be the same."

  40. I had no idea there was so much anti-Nickelback stuff going on! Nor did I know about fb giving lists of people to unfriend. There is music I don't like- but I don't care if my friends like it or not. :) To each his own.

  41. I still like Nickleback. I love Chad Kroeger's voice. My music taste is eclectic, but I am not that into techno or rave music.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I hate Rush. Hate. The moment I hear that guys voice on the radio my finger moves at lightening speed to change it. Yes, I know that they are in the rock and roll hall of fame and that they are all very talented musicians, blahblahblah. Still hate em. Nickelback's got nothing on Rush! :)

  43. Amazing; musical lemmings, fall in line, ha ha.

This band was nothing special to me, but I despise the trend for people to direct what I should or should not listen to.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Awww, I like that video, I never saw it before. I never understood the Nickleback hate either. I have never hated a band like that because hate is such a wasted emotion.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I never knew they were so hated. Love the quote about the satanic messages and playing it forward.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I didn't realize people hated the band. I just sort of forgot about them.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hilarious! *LOL* I always thought it amusing how much people hate Nickleback. Then it was Coldplay. I'm not fans of either band, but I never understood why either of them were picked on like that.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I actually liked them, I still do (a few songs) but I've never been a fan fan. I pretty much like most music, though pure pop just really annoys the hell out of me.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I've never been a fan, but I sure would presume to tell others not to enjoy the music. I'm not into campaigns against people or groups of any kind. Well, the Taliban or Isis, but outside of that, I'm Swiss.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well, dear heart...being the olden age that I am, I don't know any groups and haven't heard Nickelback...bet my grandgirls have, tho. :)
Now, having said all this, I have some favorite OLDEN groups that I like but can't think of any I DON'T like.

  51. I don't get it, I like a few of their songs. Music should be universal right?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think the fact that Nickleback's success spawned an endless stream of imitators is the real problem. When they first came along, they were novel. Now they're just the model everyone else follows. The same thing happened with Garth Brooks.

My nemesis band: The Smiths. Among more recent acts, I've had enough of the Killers to last me a good long while.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yeah . . . I don't get the Nickelback hatred at all. They were never a favorite of mine, but geez . . . could you find something a bit less arbitrary to soapbox, oh, and also, could you give a legitimate reason for your dislike? The only band I actively disliked is one that I can't even recall the name of, but their most popular song was all about cheating, and wishing they were with someone else, and talking quietly b/c the boyfriend was in the other room, and just BLAH.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hinder, I think it was? Lips of an Angel? That song always creeped me out but it was definitely during the Nickelback craze. Someone decided they had "that sound" that was hot at the time. I think that band was a one-hit wonder.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Not sure what people get from running someone/anyone down. I've learned my lesson since getting a review or two that were less than glowing. I NEVER leave a negative review. IF I don't like a book, I simply do not leave a review. Too much negativity in this world without me adding my two cents!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I never listened to them, so I guess I am exempt from the backlash.

People crack me up on the Internet in terms of what they become passionate about. The I hate this performer or band or actor or sports figure.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I admit I was never a fan as well and have never been into boy bands...ever. Which made it hard in school when all of my friends like N'Sync and New Kids on the Block. I don't know, they just never were for me.
I would never be mad at someone for liking something I didn't though. Where would the fun be in all of us always liking the same thing?

    ReplyDelete
  58. I always thought the lead singer sounded like he really needed a hug.

I can't think of any particular bands that I loathe with that kind of passion, but I think this Nickelback thing is funny.

    ReplyDelete
  59. From what I heard, the Nickelbacklash (cute!) started when the band formed a record company and began spawning Nickelback soundalikes, such as Theory of a Deadman.

I actually like Nickelback. They have great fight and workout songs. I used to hate AC/DC because I thought they sounded like screeching, but now I like some of their stuff. The only music act (if you can call it that) that I hate with a passion is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvjDr8KKtsE&list=PL9A9AC4321245A79C

My bf used to sing this to tease me, and he almost died as a result.
