W is for Walking

This month I'm participating in the A to Z Challenge. My theme is indulgences. Today's letter is:

For today's indulgence, I'm writing about something many people see as hard work. For me, one thing that always improves my mood is walking.

Of course, my favorite place to walk would be alongside water, especially on the beach.

Unfortunately, most days my view looks a little closer to this.

Thankfully, my addiction to SongPop takes my mind off of the drudgery. I start playing and, next thing I know, 50 full minutes have passed. It's sweet.

What's your favorite form of exercise?

  1. I love walking too-we have a large trail system right by our house that I enjoy walking on :)

Right now my exercise schedule is 4 days of strength training (1 hour per time, with body-weight exercises), 1-2 days of walking/2 miles a time and then 1 rest day, per week.

  2. I love walking as exercise but it doesn't work anymore. Feel too guilty to take off on a walk without the dog and she's far more interested in meeting people and dogs and stopping to sniff for it to be exercise. For exercise, Just Dance for 45 minutes. Having the Wii tracking my activity keeps me engaged.

  3. Donna, that's why I do the treadmill. Although there are many times my dog sits next to it, watching me walk. I wonder if she's thinking, "If you're going to do that, why don't you do it outside...and take me with you?" Yep, guilt!

  4. I'm a runner, but I always walk to cool down afterwards:) I would give anything to run on the beach! Now,it's either the treadmill or a park next to the Mississippi River:)

  5. OK-I have Ehlers-Danlos-I am double jointed in every joint so I can easily dislocate my joints and I create scar tissue from doing every day things. The only 2 forms of exercise I can do is gentle walking and swimming. The pain is constant but at least I enjoy both when I can do it. I would love to walk more but walking alone on the trails may not be the best and need to find someone so I walk around the blocks and go for aquafit which is fun.

  6. I love taking walks! And since I have metal rod screwed to my spine, it's pretty much the only exercise I can do. :)

  7. I don't know about favourite...walking is the only exercise I do, hee hee!
I love walking along a beach too. Wish we could all do that more often!

  8. I used to go biking every day for 15+ minutes, including jumps and a couple stunts. Now days I hit the elliptical and read out loud to the kids while working out, or to myself. =)

  9. I wish I had a treadmill. I like walking, I like music, and I like not getting soaked when it rains :)

  10. Until I turned 40 I was a long-distance runner (10 miles up to marathon).
I got a knee injury and by the time I was 45 my running days were over. Since then I've gone back to cycling which I did a lot of as a teenager.

  11. I enjoy walking. Sadly, I am a fair weather walker, which means there is only about 2-4 months out of the year that walking is good in Wisconsin. I am so happy that it is finally starting to warm up here (it was in the upper 40s F today!). This winter has been so horrible I feel like a lump that doesn't want to move!

  12. I have a recumbent bike which I use most days for exercise, but it's not my favourite form. I do like walking, on the moors (Yorkshire & Somerset), although disability prevents me from walking too far in one go, but I love river banks and waterfalls and long, rolling views when out for a stroll. :)

  13. We, as a family, do a lot of walking. We don't own a car and no one really likes public transportation (amirite?) so we walk everywhere we can.

My favourite form of exercise is swimming, but these days I'm far too self-conscious to wear a suit in public LOL Maybe that will be my motivation to lose some weight.

  14. My favorite exercise has to be walking. Then Yoga.

To answer your question biting is a normal puppy behavior. Millie is so adorable, a bundle of laughs too.

  15. I run for exercise and stress relief, but walking on the beach is wonderful too.

  16. I think walking is just a wonderful way to clear the head. This was a great post for W!

  17. I have never heard of Song Pop. What is that?

Occasionally I go walking with my father. He walks daily. For, like, an hour and a half. Going walking with him wipes me out for a week!

  18. Liz A., Songpop is a smartphone game. A song plays and you have to name either the artist or song faster than your opponent. Pretty addictive.

  19. Yoga in the morning is good. I get lots of exercise making a terrace in the gulch behind our house and doing construction on a chicken run in the gulch. A chicken run is an enclosure for chickens.

  20. I don't especially like exercise as in working out, but I love walking. I used to love to walk in the mountains when I lived in Tennessee. Now that I'm in L.A. I walk the city streets which is okay, but it's not as good as the nature walks.

  21. I am a walker. Audiobooks are my walking buddies. My favorite time to walk is at night especially under the moon and stars. Sigh.

  22. Stephnie,

I think it would have to be walking for me too. I don't belong to a gym anymore, but walk around my neighborhood, unless it's too cold in winter or too hot in summer. In the summer, it gets to 115 degrees here so you have to go very early or just around sunset.

  23. Is that a trick question?

Actually, I like hiking but not because it's exercise. I like the... nature!

  24. Sigh, I wish I had mor time for any exercise, let alone walking, which I enjoy. But my favorite exercise is Zumba. Though there was that one time when I almost hostile-y took over my zumba class a la Joan of Arc in Bill and Ted's excellent Adventure...

  25. Good for you for 50 minutes on the treadmill! I like to walk too! Hubby and me do about a 35-40 minute walk 3-4 times a week.

  26. You're so disciplined! Walking is a great way to keep fit and burn calories without any stress to muscles and joints. Keep it up!

(Thanks for the info about Waverley Sanatorium. I'm shocked they're making it into a B&B. That'll cost a fortune!)

  27. My favourite form of exercise is jogging, walking and yoga. While walking I do a lot of brainstorming for my features and stories.

  28. You and I would get along very well. I'm a hiker. I take to the trail--and that includes the beach--for my exercise. Next is a weight class where a lot of social time happens, and then yoga.

Still, those hikes are my best exercise.

Thanks for stopping in at The Write Game. New follower here.

  29. I like walking and running. Waling outside in nature is the best!

  30. I think it is strange that people view walking as work. Pedestrians often use walking as a way to get around, and as a pedestrian and bicyclist who does not drive, I have no gym bill. I love it.

  31. I miss walking! I've had 3 surgeries on my foot and ankle and have been laid up for over 2 years now! I have one more surgery this fall and then hopefully, after my recovery and rehab, which will take about 6 months, I'll be able to get out and walking again! It's a drag being laid up!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm a runner for sure :) for me, it's the best stress relief ever - but only if it's outside! Being on the treadmill tends to stress me out MORE, Lol.

  33. I too love to walk. I walk while listening to audiobooks. Some people walk and sing while bouncing to their favourite beat where I usually end up laughing out loud or blushing LOL

  34. I haven't exercised in a while but when I did, hiking was definitely my favorite. :)

  35. I love walking!! I try to walk everywhere. Maybe I need to power walk sometimes to make it more aerobic! LOL!!

Hoorah for SongPop!!! I've not heard of it but if it makes 50 minutes on a treadmill go by happily then I'm all for it!!

    Take care

  36. I pretty much hate all forms of exercise, so no form of it would make my indulgences list. :-) But because I was having so many back problems, I did 'indulge' myself in a treadmill desk, and it has helped a lot.

  38. Until the arthritis in my feet took me down, I did the Netflix exercise program. I'd plug in a video and treadmill through the whole movie!

Now, I can't walk well, so exercise is a lot more difficult. Got any good ideas? I should mention....I HATE exercise...

    ReplyDelete
  39. ThriftySoul--That one is difficult. I messed my knee up doing one of those stair-steppers. The dr. told me to stick with walking (not jogging or running) because it was easiest on the knees. I know water aerobics is the best form of exercise because it's easy on the joints. Swimming in general... Any other exercise will likely involve your feet. Yoga might be an option...

  40. There's nothing quite like walking along the beach! I enjoy walking too but lately I've been doing some biking and it's very satisfying as well. There's more to pay attention to (or worry about) so it's not quite as relaxing as walking or running but I'm enjoying it right now :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Walking for me, too. On the beach is ideal, but I live in a landlocked state, so generally it's by a lake for me. Walking always makes me feel better.

  42. I enjoy walking too - and you're right. It's so much nicer alongside a lake! :)

  43. Oh, I love my treadmill! I don't have to worry about weather or getting run over by a vehicle. :o))

    ReplyDelete
  44. I hate exercise. But long walks outside don't feel like exercise.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love to walk too, I'm just not a fan of treadmills.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hmmm, I'd have to say Zumba. I love to dance and Zumba is like a dance party and a work-out all in one. Can't beat that!

Although, my BEST form of exercise, not necessarily my favorite, but the one that is most effective, would be running (but it looks more like a jog/half-limp). :)

  47. I love walking, especially in the woods. Now I must try to convince my son that it isn't work but something meant for fun and relaxation!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I used to walk all the time, but my writing has taken over my evenings. I can't wait for the summer when I'm on vacation. I'll be walking.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Nice word. We can all use more walking. I actually try to walk rather then take transportation.

  50. The Mrs. is the big walker/hiker. I prefer to run and get it over with, but would rather be playing a sport or riding a bicycle.

I hope you had a nice weekend Stephanie.

  51. When I lived by the beach it was walking. I've always loved swimming but have issues with my nearest pool and seem to have had a cold forever.. Am I making excuses for why I don't do enough these days.. yes! oops.. Better go find something like your view to help get my body back into a bit of shape...

    ReplyDelete
  52. I love walking, it helps me to think better. I love walking barefoot on the beach however it's very far from my house so I make do with a garden nearby. Walking barefoot on freshly cut grass helps too!!

  53. Running - since joining the blogging community I have found 2 great homes in Writing Bloggers and Running bloggers.

Running is where the magic happens (and by magic i mean the slow deterioration of you body with the slow restoration of your mind)x

  54. One of my best purchases EVER was a trek desk, so I can walk while I work. The time flies by (unless I've set the incline for 10 or higher…then not much can distract me).

I love to walk, but if I had to choose my ultimate favourite form of exercise, it would be kickboxing or swimming in the ocean. (A calm ocean.)

  55. Walking is one of my favorite exercises too. It's cheap and you can do it anywhere.

  56. Stephanie,

I love running rather than walking. I prefer to run outside. Time seems to pass so slowly when I run on the treadmill. Perhaps I should try SongPop!

  58. I love walking as well. And I have a dog so I have to get out there at least once a day for an hour. it's very relaxing and my dog loves it.

  59. Walking is one of my favorite things to do! It is fun and if I have a walking partner the time flies! I also love SongPop! I play daily. Maybe we play each other? Who knows- but I have a blast listening to different pieces of songs and can see how it would help pass the time.

I would love bookmarks for my class- but don't know if the offer is still out there. I will try to email you. :)
