P is for Pizza!

This month I'm participating in the A to Z Challenge. My theme is indulgences. Today's letter is:

For P, I'm focusing on a food item with appeal that extends far beyond its deliciousness.

For families all across America, pizza for dinner means one thing.

You place a phone call and, within minutes, a friendly person shows up with a box.

I think our love for pizza goes even further, though. For many of us, "pizza" was a part of almost every great gathering we've ever had. Super Bowl parties. College get-togethers, retirement celebrations at work.

It's the perfect food for groups. It feeds many without requiring utensils. You don't even need a plate.

How often do you have pizza night at your house?

Want some bookmarks for your classroom or library? Email  me with your address and I'll send some right away.

  1. We used to go pizza a couple of times a month, but for some reason have not had one in awhile.

I think your post has my mind focused on dinner though.

  2. Usually we order pizza 2-3 times a month over here. I'm actually not a fan of it so I'll usually order a sub when the family gets pizza :)

  3. I come from a family of picky eaters. Pizza was the only food we could all agree on, so Mom decided to make a statement. She fed us pizza every night for two weeks, hoping we'd get tired of it. We didn't, but she sure did. Mom lost that battle.

  4. We love Pizza. Nowadays I have started loving thin crust pizza a lot, though deep pan one is an eternal favourite.

  5. You will be surprized but we order pizza maybe once a year...maybe. Most of the time I can not eat it due to sugar in the tomato sauce and the white bread-knocks out my blood sugar

  6. One of my favourite take-aways which we have about once a month. My all-time favourite topping is tuna and mushrooms with extra mushrooms.

  7. With a kid in the house, pizza is big over here -- cheese pizza, peperoni, and veggies for me. It's a good go-to food, but I wish I could cut down on it a bit. Still, we love pizza! Great choice for letter P.

  13. Friday nights are pizza nights in this house. Yay! And you're right, there are so many happy psychological associations with pizza that have nothing to do with the deliciousness.

  14. We have pizza maybe once a week. It's quick and easy - no major effort to prepare, or eat.
Unlike many people I work with now, I remember a time before pizza.
I left home in '69 to join the Army and it was when I came back to the UK on leave, I thought there seemed to be a serious increase in fast-food joints.

  17. I love pizza. I prefer delivery, rather than the ones from frozen foods.

  18. Perfect P post! I know what I'm having for dinner. We just got a Toppers Pizza nearby. A build your own pizza type place. Yummy!

  19. Leslie--We have Papa Murphy's here. You bake the pizza at home. I'd rather have it delivered to my door already cooked!

  20. Stephanie,

We live 'out of town'. I'm not sure the pizza place delivers to our village. We usually make our own. We love having pizza on a family movie night. Everyone loves pizza!

  22. We used to have pizza a few times a month when all the kids were home. Now that they're either on their own or at college, we only have it when some of them are around. I miss it but not the calories. It is the perfect meal at our house.

  23. we go through phases in our house. Pizza will happen several times over the course of a month then not for six months. It is a very versatile food.

  24. We love pizza at my house! In fact, every Friday night is pizza and a movie night. It's a fun tradition and it means I get a break from cooking! Can't beat that! Sometimes it's just a frozen pizza, sometimes it's homemade, but tonight we had Papa John's. Yum! :)

That's cool you did TV broadcast journalism in college. I switched my major after my first communications class. I decided Marriage and Family Therapy was probably better suited for me. I've always loved the ins and outs of relationships, which could be why I'm drawn to writing romance. :)

  25. We have pizza night more often than I am comfortable admitting ;)

No one delivers to where we live though so at least we aren't tempted to just pick up the phone!

With 5 kids (3 teens), pizza's definitely an indulgence at our house :)

  27. No pizza night here. Don't eat pizza very often at all. I am from the UK although these days they probably eat pizza as much as people in the US. I was brought up without it and prefer to cook myself.

    Thanks for your visit.

  28. Love pizza! It's nice when you're too tired to cook, as well as good for get togethers.

  29. LOL, we're having pizza tomorrow for dinner; the local grocery store had their pizzas on sale for $5 today; hubby grabbed two; they are cheese pizzas but we'll doctor them up with our favorite toppings and have them for dinner and a few days afterwards for lunch.

These days I don't order a lot of pizzas to be delivered or even to pick up; maybe once every 3 months, but there was a time in our lives when I did, so much that when I went into the pizza place to pick up the pizza one time instead of having it delivered, everyone knew me by name and address (I think its because I tipped so well on deliveries :)

  30. Yes, yes, and yes. Pizza is one of my favorite foods. That and spaghetti. I swear I must have Italian heritage in my bloodline somewhere.

  31. I love making homemade pizza. Now I want pizza (and Mexican food because I also read your other post). It's only 8:30 here though…dammit ;)

  32. A few times per month. Although you can have your pizza delivered. We mostly pick them up on the way home from something, like work.
