O is for Office Supplies

This month I'm participating in the A to Z Challenge. My theme is indulgences. Today's letter is:

For my O, I've chosen a slightly outdated topic. Something many of us don't even use anymore, in this era of electronics. But I still get that same thrill when I walk into an office supply store.

It seems like only yesterday that I was purchasing notepads and pens for writing. I'd hand-write my novels and type them up later. My brain seemed to work better that way. I had a very specific notepad I bought.

And I was even pickier about my writing pens.

I also had this weird affection for daily planners. The kind online calendars have completely replaced.

Now I walk into an office supply store and long for the days when a new notepad and set of pens meant a new book. I miss those days...but, most of all, I'm sad for a younger generation that will never know the joy of a new notepad or day planner.

Do you still buy office supplies? Or have computers replaced your need for them entirely?

Want some bookmarks for your classroom or library? Email  me with your address and I'll send some right away.

  1. I still get through pens - I get more and more fussy about the style and grip etc. I still use an A4 spiral-bound book to keep all sorts of notes and workings in - very useful to look back if I forget things or had ideas I jotted down. Backs of envelopes are too small these days, and not given to easy filing!

But I don't get through nearly as much as I used to - in fact I have a 10 year-old near-full box of large envelopes. Anyone want some?

  2. Colored pens and notebooks are my favorites. It used to take me forever to take notes in class because I insisted on color-coding everything. I'm not so bad nowadays though haha

  3. I just replaced my paper planner with the google calendar/planner app on my phone. I loved paper planners, but so many times I'd leave it at home and then need to look up a date/schedule something while I was out, and it became a bit of a mess. I do still use notepads for lists, blogging ideas etc though :)

  4. Oh I love office supplies. I never bought a daytime planner but I have my calendars-real ones:) I get to look at beautiful pictures and my weekly planner/calendar shows great art each week. In my world, the computer will never replace these. I love my binders:)

  6. I love office supplies. Earlier I too would hand-write my books and type them later. Nowadays I only outline in longhand. All the writing is done on the laptop.

  8. Love office supplies. I still can't use a computer for day planning. It must be written down on a pad of paper or a calendar. But with my writing, it's just easier to do everything on my laptop, unless I can't quite work out a scene. Then I revert back to paper. Paper and pens=my obsession:)

  9. I still get notebooks to have five my bed and on the kitchen table, places throughout the house and on the deck to aid me in case I get a momentary flash of wisdom. And I am fussy about my pens. But other than writing down those unplanned inspirations, my computer aids my work.

  10. LOL. I love those office supplies too. I still buy planners. I used them to jot ideas in for blogs. Studies have proven that hand writing things keeps brains healthy in ways working on keyboard doesn't so indulge in that sweet notebook and write away.

  11. I love office supplies! Whenever it's back-to-school season I hit the stores and stock up on notebooks and pens like a crazy hoarder. ;)

  12. Jennifer--I use my computer calendar for planning and forget to check it. I forget even when it's on my phone!

Glad to know I'm not the only one who is picky about her pens!!! If you're writing a book longhand, you have to have good ink flow!

  13. I still buy office supplies :) I do a lot of my first drafts (even, like you, novels) long hand in very specific notebooks using very specific pens. I also use post-it notes for outlining and revising and occasionally index cards too :)

  14. If I saw two Sponge Bobs at an Office Depot like that, I'd run out of the store screaming. :)

  15. I love office supplies! They are the big girl equivalent to a new box of crayons to start the school year! I still am not comfortable keeping my schedule on a computer/phone. What if there were an electronic blip in the universe and I didn't know my plans? So I still keep a planner. Besides, it's the perfect excuse to buy and use gel pens!

  16. I still buy office supplies, just not the same ones. With the home schooling it would be impossible to avoid them altogether. My kids do still work with pens and notebooks, though not as much as we did when we were young.

  17. Ooh, I love stationery. I imagine I will always stock up on office supplies, irrespective of technological advancements. This post will tell you more about how much I love office supplies - http://themagicquill.blogspot.in/2013/11/the-grip.html

  18. Oh, I love Office Depot and could wander through it for hours. I have an affection for all kinds of ink pens and like you, I like a hard copy calendar/day planner. I love my Outlook calender on my computers but I still hand write on my wall calendar too.

And, I love all the Avery products for computers.

    Great post!

  19. I have to admit that I prefer my Google calendar to the ol' day planners---mostly because I can set up the online calendar to reach out and smack me in the face with a reminder a couple of days a head of time.

  20. I am SO with you on this one! I'm like a kid in a candy store when I go to Staples ;) Even though, like you, I barely need anything there anymore. It IS sad - but I'll always love them, anyway!

  21. I end up walking into an office supply store with excitement, then feeling disappointment when I realize if I buy a notepad and pens, I won't have time to use them. Maybe I should close the laptop and work on my novel longhand this weekend. Hey, it's a holiday, why not?!

  22. Stephanie,

We love office supplies! Our favourite shop is Officeworks. The girls and I walk around choosing pens and notebooks etc and feel so excited about using them. We like using the computer to write our novels, blog posts etc but there's still a use for a notebook and a pen. There is something very special about an empty notebook. It's waiting to be filled. Anticipation! This post is about one of my favourite indulgences!

  23. Oh I love office supply stores. All my first drafts are written on college ruled binder paper. Then when I edit I print everything off and make all my edits on the paper. It just what works for me (and I'm a technology nut LOL). Great post.

Thank you for visiting my blog at http://kristenatunstall.com. I also am doing the challenge in memory of my little girl who's now in heaven at http://mommysangelinheaven.com

  24. I absolutely still love office/school supply stores!!! It's my favorite place to browse. I want the name of those pens you've posted too of course! I get a new journal almost every time I return to the States. I never worry about filling them. They always seem to get used. - Shelina

  25. I think I'm still a little old-fashioned. I use a giant- sized paper calendar to keep track of all the soccer practices, baseball games, band concerts, etc. I have yet to use the calendar on my computer! Sometimes I forget there is even such a thing! :)

Also, LOVE your bookmarks! They are soooo cute!!

  26. Kristin--Thank you! I had a great bookmark designer but she had a wonderful design from the cover designer, Annabelle Metayer, to work from. I love Annabelle's covers:

  27. Hi Stephanie,
    Good to be here again!
    Oh! No! I don't think
    Its and outdated topic!
    Instead its a relevant one!
Hey, Hey, What about ink pens :-)
I still use an Ink Pen!
A Chinese one the famous Hero Pen!
with the same old golden colored cap :-)though sometime the ink will not
flow properly I take time to repair it an use it. LOL
Very interesting post. Thanks for sharing this.
May you have a wonderful weekend.

  29. Good one. I still enjoy a trip to the office supply store, and we can never have enough notebooks.

  30. I love office supplies and though much is done on the computer now, I used to hand write all my novels too and then type them up later.

I love colored pens and pencils and use tons of sticky notes. I still buy notepads in different sizes for jotting down ideas.

  31. I use pens and copy paper, and a notebook that I journal in, but that's about it. Times sure have changed!

  32. I love office supply places! There is something so exciting about a walk through the aisles of pens and dividers and savory notepads. I love journals and sketch pads too. Sticky notes are still a thrill for me. I like my computer but there is still something so creative and fulfilling about writing with pen and paper! :)

  33. Oh I'm a stationery hoarder, Stephanie! ;) I keep indulging myself. The notebooks come in handy for my 'Morning Pages' :)

  34. I hoard office supplies. If I don't get to use them for myself, I take them to the day job. I can't resist pretty notebooks. I have a huge stack of them, unused since I mainly type.

  35. I love office supplies! Wrote a long comment yesterday morning explaining all the reasons why. Then my phone froze up and it was gone.

  36. I still love office supplies, or as we refer to it in the UK, 'stationery'.
It's a good thing I still like them, because for the last 18 years I've worked for the largest stationery retailer in the UK.
I have a PC, and a laptop, but apart from them, my little study looks like an ad for our store.
Apart from my electronic writing, I use notebooks of varying sizes, depending on where I am.
