Kathleen had a daily planner. Everyone at the station probably had one, since it WAS 1991 and PDAs hadn't even been invented yet, let alone iPhones and Blackberries. She marked all of her appointments in it and wrote out her daily tasks, checking them off when she was done.
At some point during the summer, I decided to incorporate a daily planner into my life as well. It quickly became an addiction.
By the end of the summer, I'd tossed my purse in favor of a Franklin planner with a purse strap. I had the credit card organizer and the change pocket insert.

The Franklin planner purse also had a pocket for your sunglasses and you could hang your car keys with a little clip. No cell phone pocket, of course -- didn't need one -- and I guess it was assumed you didn't need a place for your lipstick and compact mirror. In the end, that's why the Franklin planner purse didn't stay in my life very long.
But my addiction to daily planners continued past college graduation, and well into my career as a public relations consultant. I rejected my employer's offer to pay for my daily planner refills because they would only pay for the basic.

I wanted the pretty designer refills, with pictures of trees and flowers in the background.

I'd go to the office supply store and stand in front of the planners for long periods of time, searching for new, fun inserts to make my planner more usable. No telling how much money I spent pimping my planner, but it made me happy.
Then came Personal Digital Assistants. I never even came close to succumbing to this new technology trend. When cell phones began becoming more and more complex, I was well aware I could go electronic. And at work we were encouraged to use the calendar built into our e-mail system. But I just couldn't get into it.
Now I have an iPhone and I know I should use its calendar functionality...but as easy as these online calendars are (NO paper!), they just aren't as fun as the old Franklin calendars.

I love my planner! I'm actually do for a new one for when school starts, thanks for the inspiration!! Maybe I'll head to Borders before they close to get a good deal. I can't wait to get one now! :)
This is going to sound really bizarre, but I worked at ABC headquarters in LA and that's where I first learned about day planners. My boss had a small Filofax and it was red and so cute I had to get one of my own. I loved that thing and wore it out. It really did help me keep organized.
I still like the planners like that. When I was a caseworker for DCFS, my coworkers all used their phones and things, and I still had my giant paper planner.
I used to use a planner like that all the time and then for some reason I just stopped. After realizing I was forgetting appointments and plans, now I am trying to get used to using my calendar on my phone. It's not easy.
I've never needed a planner. I book some of my work meetings on my Outlook calendar, basically so my coworkers can see when I'm free and when I'm not. But I just don't have a hectic schedule. I can keep most things in my head.
Love them! But, I did finally switch to the calendar/planner in Microsoft Outlook. It's nice to have one less thing to carry, although sometimes I think it was easier to open a book.
You're posts are great!

I love planners! I use a paper one and digital ones - so I am planning twice how silly is that???
I still use a paper planner. LOVE IT. Hate digital ones. I use one for work and it annoys me.
I still use a paper Franklin planner. Must be the writer in me!
I don't have an IPad or Iphone, yet, but they don't have all the little "gadgets" like the daily planner. I agree. :)
I always loved my day planner! I don't use any now though. Isn't that sad?
I still use one. In some cases, as this one, pen and paper are unbeatable...
I still use a daily planner! Writing things down is the only way I remember to do something... and it's just not the same when it's typed online!
The Franklin system is a good system and we make our kids use the daily planners (we have family planning weekly). I never did find an electronic substitute that I liked as well until ... the ipad. I think it is some sort of outlook thing and it is linked to my windows live account ... and to my husband's calendar and my daughter's. It is the right size (the little phone is too small) and wonderfully convenient. It's better for appointments. Not better necessarily for journaling (although my daughter does her journaling electronically and so does my husband). (I’ll add that I don’t think it is the ipad that makes it so great but the electronic pad concept that is the perfect size and it keeps you linked up.)
My mom STILL uses one, as do all of her school friends. They call them FRANKIES!!! I can hardly stand the nickname. LOL!
I am notoriously disorganized. I could really do with a planner!
I love technology, but I love a paper planner. There is something nice about sitting by the fire with a glass of wine and jotting down things.:)..or in the car or mall, I can sketch something I like. I used to have a "purse planner" and LOVED it. Then I went total tech for years, but now I am searching for a purse planner. Can't seem to locate one, and just may have to make my own. If anyone knows where to get one, please pipe up!
