Even the songs that didn't get me through rough times at some point in my life were uplifting. How could you listen to Baby Baby without smiling?
There was the nostalgia factor of hearing songs I haven't heard in years. Like Stay for Awhile, a song I had on 45 that I listened to from the time I got it well into my high school days.
Then there were the songs that got me through hard times. Like House of Love, which says "...when something this strong gets a hold on you, the odds are 99 to 1, it's got a hold on him too." Those lyrics never turned out to be true for me. Anytime it looked like "he" was gone for good, he pretty much was. But I appreciate Amy's optimism.
Tears came to my eyes when I heard I Will Remember You. I wasn't remembering anyone in particular. Maybe it was a combination of all the people who had come in and out of my life over the years. Or maybe it was just a trigger from times past, when I'd hear the song and cry for someone in particular.
But have you ever heard a song that feels like a huge lyrical HUG? That's how I see this song. And this is why I'll always love Amy Grant's music.

I didn't know Amy's still around. I remember her from high school (I mean her stuff was out when I was in high school, not that I knew her in high school).
"I Will Remember You" is a very emotional song. But I love when I hear a song that feels like, as you say, a hug. Like the lyrics were written just for me at that moment. Happy Girl by Martina McBride is my go-to song for a pickmeup.
There are a lot of songs that remind me of a part of my past, even though how I feel is a tad bit different than what the song is about...when I get a minute I want to write about a music and how some songs just touch me and get me through an event...even if it means something different to someone else
I've always loved Amy Grant! Glad you shared your re-discovery of her. :)
Is Amy Grant still around? I used to be a huge fan!
I won't lie, but listening to Metallica makes me feel better especially when I'm angry. So I will blast some of their songs when I drive on the expressway in Chicago and ...yes...I feel better when I get home.
I'm too weepy in the car when some songs come on. I have to hide my face so the kids don't think i'm completely insane! :O)
I love all sorts of music and it can really help soothe me if I'm down in the dumps or put some pep in my step when I need a shove.
I love Amy Grant. Her new song, Better than a Halelujah is beautiful and I think spot on! :)
She's definitely had some hits. I love when a song reminds me of good times or even nostalgic times.
I used to listen to Baby, Baby on repeat. Which, in those days, involved a lot of rewinding and fast forwarding to get to the right spot.
I have that very CD and really enjoy Amy's music. I'm also glad there's still someone else around who's played a 45.
Yes, Amy's still around. She actually lives in Nashville, always has. There were stories of her ex-husband taking a helicopter from their house in Franklin to wherever he taped his show -- the Opry area, I guess? I think that's about a 20 minute drive! I've met tons of people over the years who went to church with her or met her through her kids. I get the impression she's a very private, quiet person and not all that into the fame stuff.
I used to be a Amy Grant fan, back in the day. Had the same album!
I love her greatest hit cds! Those old songs are so nostalgic!
I had an Amy Grant CD I felt that way about. I gave it to a boyfriend, but he didnt' connect w/ it. :)
i GREW UP on amy grant. seriously, i went to probably 4 of her concerts. loved it.
For sure! I have some songs that instantly trigger the tears. Some Coldplay, Sarah McLachlan and a few others. If I need a good cry, I know exactly what to play :)
Ok, at the risk of sounding like a really big loser I will admit that my idea of a musical hug is listening to the original Brady Bunch soundtrack. Sunshine Day makes me smile a million smiles.
I too love these songs from Amy Grant.
You wrote, "I realized many of these songs have inspired me in ways that have nothing to do with religion." Just like these songs, did you know that what God teaches us in the Bible also have nothing to do with religion, or at least not what's commonly thought of as "religion" or "Christianity" today. What God teaches us is more about real life than "religion", and the Bible is more like a user's manual to life (but it's also more than that.)
Oh, this takes me back. I haven't listened to Amy Grant in a long time.
If I had not heard "Find a Way"... I never would have!
